One of our founding members wrote this about fishing in Panama:

3344252290_5085b45ff0_b1Fishing in Panama will be something you will remember forever. First of all the area around Pinas bay is extreme. The Darien region is dense, wild jungle situated near the southernmost part of Panama and about 80 miles from the Colombian border.

The Zane Gray reef aggregates all kinds of fish and is a sure thing for getting bait at the beginning of every day. The reef itself can be very hot for pelagic game fish, but you won’t fish on it all day long like you would fish Challenger Banks in Bermuda. The reef is small and is either hot or not. Get your bonito (little tunnies) on the reef and then go looking for your target species. Early in the season that will probably be sailfish, look for good water and you will spot them on the surface sometimes in groups of up to 10 fish. Just drag your belly strips within visual range of the fish and watch them pile on. My wife, daughter and I fished ourselves stupid in what the locals described as a “slow” week.

3344252510_17c283188c_b1The sailfish bite slows down as summer approaches and black marlin and tuna become the target species. I once spent 3 days fishing there in August and, as the sole angler, caught 85 tuna, 5 sailfish, a black marlin, a Roosterfish and few other species (when I had to take a break inshore). The tuna fishing was spectacular, once a tuna boil was spotted, the captain would back up to the boil and use a bucket to scoop bait out of the ball into the cockpit. I would then chase the bait around the cockpit until I could grab one and put it on a hook. Once in the water a tuna had it within seconds. These fish were all in the 80 – 100lb range. The captain and the mate had tuna hooked and waiting for me so as soon as we boated one, I was handed a rod with another tuna attached to it. They were trying to see if I would pass out from tuna exhaustion. The tuna go absolutely nuts on these bait balls. At one such boil, a tuna jumped at least two feet out of the water and grabbed a marlin lure that was hanging off a rod tip. We had reeled in the marlin lures and stowed the rods in the holders when we spotted the tuna boil. We lost that lure and the fish. The biggest tuna I caught that trip was 114lbs.

Panama trips will start with a flight to Panama City. At that point, you have two options. The first is to go from the airport to the boat (about a 20 minute taxi ride). At that point, “De Mako” will begin the 120 mile run to productive waters. The first 60 miles will be covered at 10 knots while you sleep, eat or watch TV. About 60 miles out from the marina, you pass Los Perlas Islands, which mark the beginning of the productive fishing area.  At night, members sleep on the boat (with crew, the capacity is 4 guests).  The return to Panama City would be accomplished reversing the previous procedure. The last day of fishing would put you at Las Perlas Islands at nightfall and the last 60 miles would be accomplished while members shower, eat and sleep on the boat.

There is a charter airline that flies from Panama City to a strip quite close to Pinas Bay. We are exploring the availability and pricing of these flights for our members.

The Captain

Mike Springer will be running “DeMako” in the Pacific. Mike has decades of experience running a large sport fishing boat up and down the western Central America coast. He has fished Panama several seasons and has been running the Lucky Devil out of Los Suenos for the past five years. Mike lives in Jaco, Costa Rica with his wife and family.

The Boat

boat11“DeMako” is a 57ft. Carolina Sportsfisher, built by Sunny Briggs, and powered by twin 700hp diesels, making her a great blend of speed and reliability. With a top speed of 30 knots and a large, fully air-conditioned cabin, we will get you to and from the fishing grounds quickly & comfortably. Our tackle is updated every year so you are assured that it is all in tip-top condition. “DeMako” will sleep four plus the crew in Panama and has a large bridge to give you a great view of the action.
